lecturer media production, 2006-2012
At Utrecht University, I served as a Lecturer in Media Production within the Department of Media and Culture Studies. My role was primarily focused on translating complex media theories into applied production skills, ensuring that students developed a rigorous understanding of the craft alongside their academic research. I was responsible for the design, delivery, and assessment of several core modules that bridged the gap between theoretical analysis and creative execution.
In the Practicum Video course, I guided students through the complete lifecycle of media creation. The curriculum covered essential disciplines, including directing, script development, cinematography, and post-production for both fiction and documentary formats. A significant portion of this role involved intensive mentoring and coaching, where I supported student projects from initial concept through to final cut, emphasizing the importance of narrative intentionality in every technical choice.
In the Theatre and Media Dramaturgy course, I co-guided students in developing a professional orientation toward roles such as script editor, development executive, and story developer. Recognizing the evolving nature of the industry, I expanded the scope of this course to include creative producing. This addition provided students with a more comprehensive understanding of how creative vision intersects with project management and industrial constraints.
Beyond my primary teaching duties, I developed new production courses and supervised student internships within the media sector. By acting as a liaison between the university and external production companies, I ensured that students could successfully apply their academic training within professional environments. This foundational experience at a major research university solidified my commitment to practice as research, a philosophy that continues to inform my approach to institutional architecture and curriculum design.
