site specific audiovisual installation, 2009

multiple video loops and soundscapes on different sized monitors and screens

Audiovisual installation in collaboration with Matthijs V. Kouw. Made especially for the Culturele Zondag Nieuwjaarsduik at Kunstuitleen Utrecht (Art Library).

The Kunstuitleen was situated on the Maliebaan, a street with a lot of history and stories in Utrecht. The installation was inspired by the statues on the Maliebaan and the sights and sounds of both the Maliebaan and The Art Library. In the building of the Art Library, seven different audio/video combos were presented (both on monitors and projections), in the context of the building itself and its collection.

Conceptually, the work was inspired by Gilles Deleuze’s book “The Fold” (Le Pli), which examines Leibniz’ philosophy and the baroque period. Concepts such as interior/exterior, actual/virtual and immanence are manifest and folded in the installation.

For Matthijs and me, this work was a possible first venture into what we like to call “location based installations”. For us, a location based installation is an audiovisual installation, comprising of one or more audio/video combinations, that is conceptually and in its content influenced by and tailor-made to the location it is presented in: a true site specific installation.
