kinetic immersive space, 2009-2010
auction crates, lights, autoplay instruments, found objects

“Als das Kind Kind war,
war es die Zeit der folgenden Fragen:
Warum bin ich ich und warum nicht du?
Warum bin ich hier und warum nicht dort?
Wann begann die Zeit und wo endet der Raum?
Ist das Leben unter der Sonne nicht bloß ein Traum?”

When the child was a child
it was time for the following questions:
Why am I me, and why not you?
Why am I here, and why not there?
When did time begin, and where does space end?
Isn’t life under the sun only a dream?

(Peter Händke)

When the child wasn’t a child anymore,
it was time for these following questions:
Who was left behind when I moved on?
What have I forgotten, and what have I lost?
Where are who I was and what I’ve seen stored?
When did fun turn into cynicism?

How did the then and there change into the here and now?

Why does it now get dark where it used to be light?

And why do you always lose half a pair of socks?

Kinetic installation in collaboration with Wouter van Veldhoven. First exhibited at the Boterhal in Hoorn, July 2009 – in a joint exhibition with Elaine Vis.

The installation was an ‘attic’ of about 4 by 9 metres, placed in a totally darkened space. The walls and columns of the ‘attic’ were made out of auction crates. In these crates, different kinetic and static objects created music or sound, moved around, were illuminated by ever-changing lights or periodically created light themselves. Most objects and lights were connected and powered via wires that were suspended from above.
